The 5 Secrets to Discovering Your Calling

Have you spent the last 5, 10, or even 20 years trying to figure out your divine calling. In other words, what you were put on this earth to do?

I hear ya! I spent almost 2 decades trying to figure out my “why.” I read books, took classes, prayed endlessly. And for some reason, I always felt like I was spinning my wheels. But one New Year’s Eve, I felt like God was telling me to write. Just write.

That one word changed my life forever! As I focused on that one task, doors opened up for me I would have never seen before. I started out journaling and then looking for places to write online. A few months later, my life-long dream of working from home started to take shape.

But what does that mean for you?

I learned several lessons from that experience that can help you find your passion. Your purpose…

Your calling.

And here are the lessons I learned:

1. You Have to Keep Moving to Discover Your Calling

So many times, we are so afraid that we are not doing what we are supposed to be doing, that we just stop moving. We get stuck in one spot because any move could be a wrong move.

When I look back over my life, I now see that everything I did – every job I had, every class I took, every person I met – played a part in the journey it took to get me here. If I hadn’t had the experiences I did, I wouldn’t have the lessons I have to pass on today. For example, while I’m not using my accounting degree to hold down an accounting job today, it has certainly opened the door to many freelance writing opportunities in a lucrative field!

So, keep moving, and doing what you know to do. God WILL use your life experiences to help others!

2. Your Calling Is NOT About You

This may be a hard pill to swallow, but the truth is, God didn’t put you here to serve your own needs. Whatever calling he placed on your life is meant to serve your generation.

When you begin looking around you for needs to serve and people to help, your calling starts to reveal itself to you as never before. The people I serve are moms who want to spend more time at home with their growing kids, because that is who I’m passionate about helping. So I write about ways to earn money from home, find your calling and managing your time wisely.

When you find out who you are most passionate about helping, your purpose will be clear.

3. Your Calling is Closely Linked to What You Enjoy Doing

This is good news, right? God gives us a desire to do the things he’s called us to do. So many people are afraid to seek God’s will because they think He will send them to the mission fields of Africa, or something equally as daunting.

Let me put your mind at ease. If you don’t have the desire in your heart to minister in Africa, that’s probably not the call God has placed on your life.

Am I saying God never asks us to do anything we don’t like doing? No! Of course there are times He will lead you to do something outside your comfort zone, but the call He places on your life is something He also places in your heart.

Taking inventory of my life, I found that I had always loved writing. But I had never thought of it as my calling because it was just something I had always done and had always come easily. For some reason, we tend to think our purpose must be something painful and difficult to achieve. I believe that’s rarely the case.

4. You’ll Encounter Resistance When You Pursue Your Calling

This may sound like it contradicts what I just said, but bear with me. Yes, your calling may be in a talent that comes easily to you, but you can be sure that when you are on the right path, you will feel some resistance. The enemy is adamantly opposed to you finding God’s will and he’ll do everything he can to stop you. Most of the time, this is how you’ll know you’re on the right track!

My resistance came in the form of emotional turmoil. I felt crippled with fear and uncertainty every time I took a step in the right direction. In the first few months, I even suffered a depression I’d never had before!

But stay in faith! God WILL see you through it!

5. Positive Confessions Will Help You Discover Your Calling Sooner

This might seem a little “hokey,” but the year my life turned around was the year that I started making the faith confession, “I know God’s will for my life.”

Never underestimate the power of positive confessions! They build faith in your mind like nothing else!

My greatest discovery in my mission to find my calling was that God is not hiding His will for our lives. He wants us to know it even more than we do.

Where we often get stuck is in the fear that we will take the wrong step. God has not given you a spirit of fear! The moment you start to have faith that you CAN know His will, better things will start to unfold for you.

How long have you been searching for your calling?

  1. I was meant to read this at just this time. I too, like to write and draw as well. If I could make a living at it, it would be a dream come true.

    • Hi Christine!

I’m so glad you found the article! Stick around here and I can show you ways to make it happen. 🙂 Or contact me if you need any advice!

  2. So nicely written! Thank you. 🙂 I re-pursued my calling a few years ago, after taking a break. I was holding down a job I was good at and enjoyed, but it wasn’t truly what I was supposed to be doing. Once I started pursuing a graduate degree things started to fall into place! It wasn’t without some difficulty, but I now do what I love and know I’m good at.

  3. Wow. It’s like this was written specifically for me. Just what I needed to hear, right now. God is definitely using you in the lives of others. ❤️

  4. I would love to work at home to augment my earnings , I love reading can you help. I don’t want bitterness in my heart which is what my current day to day work has become , affecting my health and all most all facets of my life. I love the job it places food on the table , and I am a practising Christian and an African which is a bit of a problem with them to put it mildly, can you guide me .

  5. You have written very eloquently what I also believe! I’m glad I’m not the only one with some of these thoughts! I, too, have felt God’s calling to write for a long time, but was stuck in place – hearing all the negative thoughts the enemy likes to throw at us. I don’t know where my writing will lead, but I have finally stepped out in obedience. Thanks for the encouragement and keep up the good work!

    • Hi Ann!

I’m so glad you’ve decided to take the first step! That’s all God ever asks of us…one step at a time. I know you will be pleasantly surprised by how things start to unfold in your life!

      God bless!

  6. I’m 65 and need to make some extra money. Who doesn’t!? I am handicapped – I don’t walk very well. I have never heard a “calling”. What can I do?

  7. Hello, like many in comments I have secured myself and in this moment, season of my life I am writing in Faith.
Praying to use the blessed talents within as the Lord has been showing into my being. I work in Public Health, this supports my small family of 3. I love helping others, health and a passionate amature photographer, I am blessed to be homeschooling our only son…7th grader this year! I would be gracious to find a way to share these pieces of me and encourage others, a side job of passion and strengthening of others alike that does not require upfront money etc. I live daily and thus does my living expenses, would love a little supplement, but only what the Lord sees fit.
If you know of any Christian based direction that these gifts could be shared for the Lords blessings, I would be humbly thankful.
    Many Blessings.
    Kindly,
    Dawn

    • Hi Dawn!

I’m so glad you found yourself here. I believe if you find what you are most passionate about and start writing about it on any platform you can find, the Lord will use you. This blog, for example is a “work-at-home” blog because I’m passionate about helping other moms like you earn from home. But God has already used this platform as a ministry in some ways.

If you love writing, check out blogmutt, where you can earn $8 per blog post. It’s not a lot, but it’s a great place to get your feet wet and hone your skills.

      • Thank you Cheri???? I will look into this link. I have searched on my own for awhile but get overwhelmed, this was certainly meant to be.
        God Bless you.
        Kindly, Dawn

        • If you haven’t subscribed yet, I hope you will. Or check back soon. I’m working on a free beginner freelance writing course I plan to put out soon!

          Thanks again for stopping by!

  8. This is the best article I’ve read online in a long time! It literally brought me to tears. I felt like I was reading my own story. I just recently gotten over my depression and started claiming God’s will over my life, started writing again and working on a blog. I truly believe you have found your purpose and are truly doing God’s work because this really ministered to my spirit. Thank you!
